Grades 5-8

Middle school is a time of tremendous growth and opportunity at Norwood. Students explore increasingly complex curriculum, develop important study skills, learn to manage independence while navigating a wider array of choices, and serve as the student leaders of the school community.

Norwood middle schoolers enjoy a variety of learning experiences and academic resources. They might be taking notes about literature to prepare for a writing exercise in one class, then working in small groups to design, build, and test a simple machine in the next, and then rehearsing with a music ensemble in the next. Emphasis is placed on the discovery, development, and reinforcement of essential content, skills, and study habits, ensuring their preparation for high school and beyond while nurturing a continuing love of learning.

A sampling of middle school skills includes: critical analysis of primary source material; the close reading of literature; research and writing across numerous genres and disciplines; observation and analysis of data; the study of grammatical structures in English and other world languages; creative problem-solving, and the development of algebraic models and reasoning in mathematics. Content is representative of diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives and invites students to consider ideas and concepts they may not have encountered previously. As a whole, Norwood’s middle school curriculum is challenging, engaging, relevant, and thought-provoking.

In addition to their regular curriculum, Norwood middle school students participate in extensive programming in life skills, character education, and community service. These rich experiences, together with their coursework and support from caring, child-centered teachers and advisors, provide students with values and habits that will serve them well for years to come. Students in the middle school at Norwood are well known by their teachers and connected to their peers. They are hard-working, fun-loving, curious, creative, and considerate of others. I am absolutely thrilled to be able to work with them every day!
