Teaching Art with Purpose

In an increasingly competitive and global world, creativity and the ability to see new connections and visualize new ideas are becoming more and more important. Exploration, problem solving, artistic expression and self-discovery form the framework that guides our art projects. We strive to educate an artistically competent, adventuresome, and confident student, who is generally comfortable thinking outside the box in all areas of study.

Beginning in pre-kindergarten, the visual arts program offers a diverse curriculum that allows students to experience the delight, wonder, and self-assurance that comes with creative accomplishment. The program very intentionally nurtures the creative-thinking and problem-solving skills that enhance learning in all subject areas. Classes are taught in beautiful and spacious art studios, full of natural light, by teachers who are practicing artists and specialists in what they teach – be it digital art, painting, ceramic, sculpture, or printmaking – allowing for a true and organized student of the subject. Throughout Norwood, art is woven into the curriculum and is often the way in which students communicate their ideas about a subject.

The art curriculum is a sequential and cumulative program of skills and concepts where students explore and produce works of art in the following disciplines: drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, painting, mixed media/collage, and textiles digital photography, and computer graphics. The program strives to enable students to use experience, observation, and imagination to create works of personal significance within the broad guidelines of structured lessons. Projects encourage growth in self- discipline, perseverance, expansive thinking, and the collaborative spirit, which are important in art and in daily life. By coordinating their hands, minds, and hearts in exploration of the artistic world, students come to know how art enriches life.

Every student at Norwood knows that art is for everyone, not just a talented few. Every student at Norwood is an artist and their work is celebrated throughout the School with displays in the classrooms, hallways, and offices.
