Each day, our lower school classrooms are filled with joyful and engaged learning where children’s natural curiosity and individual interests and talents can shine. Norwood students question and interact with the world around them through active participation in cooperative, hands-on, and project-based learning. We believe that students gain deeper knowledge and valuable skills by exploring and responding to real world questions, problems, and challenges. A typical moment: kindergartners are collaborating and problem-solving as they build a bridge; first graders are celebrating being real writers by sharing original books at a publishing party; second graders are using recycling materials to create a lush and colorful rainforest on a hallway wall; third graders are creating Native American dioramas to represent the landscape of each Nation studied; and fourth graders are digging for artifacts in the School’s archaeological excavation site.
Our teachers do a great job of masking the rigor of the curriculum. They set high standards of achievement, and through differentiated instruction, they provide different routes, environments, resources, and pacing for each child. The goal is for every child to feel successful and to love learning so that when they leave Norwood at the end of the day, they can’t wait to return in the morning.CLICK HERE: MIDDLE SCHOOL ADMISSION OPEN HOUSE (GRADES 5-8)
The middle school years are a time of immense growth and development. Norwood's Middle School is a vibrant student-centered community of learning, discovery, and trying new experiences in a safe and supportive environment where every child is known and respected. The curriculum provides students with varied and rich opportunities to build their social-emotional competencies and critical-thinking skills. Our approach to learning is intentional, integrated, and responsive. The process of learning is central to the Norwood middle school experience, whether students are discussing equity in advisory, examining the impact of climate change in science, analyzing literature in English, or engaging in algebraic problem-solving.
Norwood teachers create experiences that support and challenge students to ponder, to experiment, and to problem-solve. Classroom experiences across all academic disciplines are tailored to engage, support, and enrich. The academic rigor is complemented by our life skills
, character education, and service-learning programs
, as well as a rich variety of clubs and groups
that create a well-rounded and fun experience. As a result, Norwood students graduate with the empathy, communication, as well as collaborative and critical-thinking skills they will use throughout their lives.
