  • Human Resources Manager (Part-Time)

    Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 40 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C.     Norwood has an opening for an experienced, dynamic Human Resources Manager. This position reports to the Director of Finance and Operations within the Business Office and manages all aspects of the employment relationship for 120 annual faculty and staff, plus seasonal and part-time employees. The Human Resources Manager must exhibit excellent interpersonal, leadership, organizational, collaborative, and written and oral communication skills, demonstrate strong human resources management expertise (particularly in the areas of employee relations, benefits administration, and employment law), and possess the following qualities and attributes: initiative, confidence, humor, empathy, and commitment to excellence. Due to the hands-on nature of the work, the candidate must also possess a strong internal customer service ethic and the ability to balance the necessary day-to-day HR operations with the demands of other matters as they arise. 
     
    The Human Resources Manager exercises strategic thinking while promoting the organizational culture and the School’s mission. They partner with key administrators to support the faculty and staff as they serve the students and parents.     Essential Job Functions
    • Employee relations: relate to and communicate with all levels of organization, elevate issues as appropriate.
    • Benefits administration: hold open enrollment, manage vendor and broker relations, assist employees with accessing care and claims processing, reconcile bills, update annual benefits overview brochure.
    • Employment law: keep up to date on regulations, use working knowledge and know when to call in counsel.
    • Full-life cycle employment process: advertise jobs, meet with candidates, conduct background checks, administer Norwood training and state requirements, guide new employees through on-boarding process.
    • Department and program hiring: monitor employment process for the after-school program, summer camp, coaches, substitute teachers, and tutors.
    • Off-boarding: handle normal attrition and other departures.
    • Leave administration: track PTO, short-term and long-term disability, and FMLA.
    • Retirement: maintain 403(b) plan documents, brief employees in case of change in employment status.
    • Compliance: track EEOC data and meet reporting requirements.
    • Database management: track background checks, child protection and safety, Maryland State Department of Education requirements, verification of education and employment.
    • Communications: manage HR intranet resource board.
    • Policy and procedures: establish appropriate protocols aligned with environment and culture.
    • Organizational development: support equity, fairness, diversity, and inclusion.
    • Special projects: complete other duties as assigned by Director of Finance and Operations and Head of School.
    The Human Resources Manager is a part-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. Five years’ previous human resources management experience required. SHRM and/or HRCI certifications and/or master’s degree preferred. Education industry and/or not-for-profit experience a plus.

    The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $90,000, dependent upon experience and schedule. This is a part-time (.60 - .80 FTE) 12-month position, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance; life and disability insurance; 403(b) retirement savings with an employer match and non-elective contribution; employee assistance program; professional development opportunities; paid vacation, sick and personal days (PTO); paid parental leave and short-term disability after one year of employment; long-term disability insurance; tuition remission for eligible children; and lunch provided on school days.

    • Bachelor's degree with a background in education or child development
    • Love of elementary- and middle-school age children
