Getting to Norwood

Norwood School offers morning and afternoon transportation to and from designated locations in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Current routes are posted to the right on this board. Routes are re-evaluated each year and determined based on interest and meeting minimum ridership requirements. The School encourages ridership (and also carpools) to minimize traffic congestion and to benefit the environment. Children must meet the minimum Maryland state requirements to be able to be transported in a booster seat. Transportation

Norwood School offers morning and afternoon transportation to and from designated locations in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Routes are re-evaluated each year and determined based on interest and the fulfillment of minimum ridership requirements. 

Children must meet the minimum Maryland state requirements to be able to be transported in a booster seat.

Morning and afternoon routes serve the following areas:
  • Chevy Chase DC
  • Friendship Heights/Spring Valley/Palisades
  • Bethesda/Chevy Chase MD
  • Northern Virginia including Arlington and McLean
  • Gaithersburg/North Potomac
  • Prince George's County/Silver Spring
 
Routes adjust yearly based on interest and minimum ridership requirements. Specific bus stops, times, and registration forms are available to current families in HawksNest.

Carpools

Norwood strongly encourages families to form carpools to minimize traffic congestion and to benefit the environment. Norwood’s online directory in HawksNest can map the locations of other families in your neighborhood.

Public Transportation & Ridesharing Services

Middle school students and lower school students with permission may take public transportation or a ridesharing service to/from Norwood if the School has on file written permission from parents/guardians. In addition, middle school students and lower school students with permission may leave school property (including designated Norwood bus drop-off locations) without adult supervision if the School has on file written permission from parents/guardians. Metrobus stops serviced by the T2/River Road Line are located across from and next to the School’s main River Road entrance. The T2 route runs between Rockville and Friendship Heights. The Route 36 Ride-On Bus runs along Bradley Boulevard to and from the Bethesda Metro Station.

  • Cost Per Child*

    $1,200 per child for a morning route
    $1,000 per child for an afternoon route*

    After Care fees are waived for students utilizing Norwood's Transportation Program unless parents opt to take the later of two similar routes to extend a student's day. Financial aid is applied at the same rate of tuition support up to a maximum of 50% support. Bus fees are billed in the fall and will be payable in two equal installments in September and January.
  • Changes, Absences, and Add-ons/Drop-Ins

    During registration, a student is assigned to a primary pick-up and/or drop-off location. Adjustments to assignments, such as selecting a different route time or bus stop, are dependent on available seats. Additionally, add-ons and drop-ins, such as a friend on a playdate, may utilize Norwood transportation only if seats are available.
  • Drivers and Vehicles

    Drivers are current Norwood School employees or professional bus drivers. All drivers participate in a training program. Driving background checks are required of all drivers.

    Norwood’s transportation fleet consists of 14-passenger Norwood activity buses, transit vans, and minivans. All vehicles are equipped with safety belts, and passengers are required to use them when riding. Vans are also equipped with booster seats.
