Leaning Tower Of Chickpeas
On the first day of school, fourth graders put on their design hats and got to work building towers out using only chickpeas and toothpicks. It was interesting to see all the different design strategies!

Helping Hands
As part of the 2017 Science Theme "The Human Machine", first and second graders in Ms. Boor's class have been learning about hand anatomy and movement. They even created their own hand models to demonstrate hand mobility.

Brace Yourself
As part of the 2017 Science Theme, "The Human Machine", fourth graders were asked to design and build a knee brace to meet three criteria: range of motion, usability, and durability. Fourth graders have been studying the anatomy of the knee, including normal and abnormal range of motion. So if you find yourself in need of a knee brace, you know who to call!

"To Kill A Mockingbird" Showcase
Seventh graders completed their study of Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" with a showcase of projects depicting themes, settings, and characters in the novel. From movie posters to games to newspapers, the projects were creative, thoughtful, and terrific representations of the students' thoughts about the book.

Sixth Grade Poetry Day
From Lewis Carroll and Robert Frost to Maya Angelou and William Blake, poetry filled Norwood School as our sixth graders recited favorite poems to celebrate National Poetry Month. Stationed all over the School, sixth graders were ready to recite their poems at the push of a button. And they did recite them...over and over and over for the many parents, teachers, staff, and students who made the rounds. Thank you, sixth graders, for this special morning of poetry!

Learning about Los Dias de Muertos
Halloween wasn't the only holiday celebrated on October 31! Fourth graders in Señora Adamson's Spanish class learned about the Dias de Muertos, a Mexican holiday acknowledged in other cultures around the world on October 31, November 1, and November 2. Students decorated calaveras de azucar (sugar skulls) while Señora Adamson told them about this time of reflection that is associated with remembering people and connecting with family members and friends. Sugar skulls are created as offerings to be placed on altars known as ofrendas for the Dia de Muertos.

Greek Agora is Open for Business
The year is 323 BC, and the Athenian Assembly is gathering today. From far and wide, people are traveling to the bustling Agora in Athens. Fifth graders selected a person who would have been at the Agora (such as a textile vendor), conducted research, and wrote a script that their character might have delivered to attract attention in the city center. They did a fantastic job getting into character and showing off artifacts and wares to the visiting parents, faculty, and staff. This fun project is part of the fifth graders' study of ancient Greece and Rome.

Can You Hear Me Now?
How do we hear? How can we help people with hearing loss? These are some of the questions explored in first grade (and second grade) science as part of this year's science theme, "The Human Machine". After learning about sound waves and how they travel, students designed and made their own ear trumpets using a variety of materials. The best part, of course, was testing their ear trumpets with each other and with Mrs. Boor. It was abundantly clear that the ear trumpets amplified sound, even when whispering.

Programing Robots in "The Orchard Challenge"
The Introduction to Programming Class is a beginner-level robotics programming course using the LEGO EV3 platform. Throughout the semester, students are solving challenges by programming their robots to move and to use different sensors. During a recent assignment, the “Orchard Challenge,” students learned that in orchards today, farmers are using robotic tractors to go through fields and spray crops, thus giving repetitive tasks over to machinery as well as minimizing chemical exposure to farm workers. The students had to program their robot to act like an orchard sprayer – to go on both sides of the line of trees without hitting them, and also to avoid the lake area.
