NEW PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM AT NORWOOD

Since our founding in 1952, Norwood School has recognized the importance of the early elementary years in building a solid foundation of skills, a positive sense of self, and a love for learning that will serve children throughout their lives. Our belief is simple: if children fall in love with learning and are challenged in a nurturing and supportive community, they will believe in themselves and their great potential.

Beginning in the fall of 2017, Norwood will expand its exceptional K-8 program to include pre-kindergarten. For years, many of our current and prospective families have been asking for a pre-kindergarten program. We believe we can better serve our families and our mission of educating the whole child by beginning our work with children at the very start of their educational journey. As a Norwood parent once said, “The best beginnings are at Norwood.” We couldn’t agree more, and we are thrilled to begin the Norwood journey one year earlier during one of the most critical periods of childhood growth and development. As stated in the 2016-2021 Strategic Plan, a strong, vibrant pre-kindergarten program lays the foundation for a creative and challenging child-centered elementary and middle school experience.

A natural extension of the Norwood educational journey, the new pre-K program will offer continued emphasis on creative expression, character and values education, social and emotional learning, hands-on experiences, and communication skills in a joyful, nurturing, supportive, and loving community – all while developing the foundational skills needed for success in kindergarten and beyond. Play-based learning, both free and guided, will be a critical component as we encourage our youngest students to:

DISCOVER

Discovery is at the heart of learning, and one of the most important discoveries a young learner can make is how to develop as an independent, confident, compassionate, and authentic person alongside others striving to do the same. Pre-K learning at Norwood is collaborative learning.

CREATE

The creative spirit is everywhere at Norwood, especially in the pre-K classrooms. Art and music and storytelling inspire children to express themselves in creative ways. Teachers frame activities as age-appropriate problems to solve, encouraging children to imagine and try something new.

EXPLORE

Exploration means taking steps into the unknown, and that means taking risks, and that happens best at Norwood where children feel loved and secure. Pre-K explorations happen inside the classroom and out. They engage all the senses. They involve water and dirt and paint and clay and plants and animals.

WONDER

Norwood School is a wonderful place to be a child. Our expert early-elementary educators tap into the very special capacity young children have for wonder. They nurture it and help it grow. They encourage curiosity, imagination, inquisitiveness, and new ways of looking at things.

BEGIN

In Norwood's pre-K program, children develop the pre-acadamic skills necessary for success in the elementary classroom. They learn to follow directions, to ask for help, to be responsible for their actions. They learn to respect others because others respect them. Ethical building blocks are put in place as they begin to understand and live the Norwood motto: How you lead your life matters.
