Lower School Curriculum Overview

Kindergarten - Second Grade

Primary grades students need to do. They need to get their hands on things, to satisfy their deep curiosity about everything around them. Norwood hires teachers whose expertise with children of this age allows them to deliver a program that meets students right where they are. Reading excellent stories accessible to their individual level, experimenting with science, discovering countries from around the world, and creating art and music that enthralls parents and children alike are just some of the ways that these students touch the world around them. They begin to build a love of learning as they build the skills to do so at the highest level.

Third Grade - Fourth Grade

During the middle years of elementary school, students’ minds are leaping forward both with what they want to know and with what they can comprehend. Norwood’s talented teachers challenge third and fourth grade students with thought-provoking obstacles of increasing complexity. Whether it is utilizing the tools they have gained in math class to tackle a complex, real-world problem or working with a team to build a crazy contraption that raises their little flag, Norwood students expand their minds as they learn new skills and how to apply them. Key elements beyond the increasing rigor of the academics include a strong emphasis on organization with the introduction of planners and binders as well explicit teaching of study skills to help them handle the rising challenges of the work. By the end of Fourth Grade, Norwood students are well prepared for the move to Middle School.
